Keyboard shortcuts

Mod means Command on macOS and Ctrl on Linux and Windows. Commands can be rebound in the Keybindings settings. A few keys are handled directly by the panes, the terminal, and the windows and are fixed: Enter, Backspace, Tab, Escape, the arrow and paging keys, Shift plus a drive letter, the context-menu keys, and the zoom keys.

File operations

No default shortcut: Create File, Directory Properties, Open in Default App, Open With…, Browse Into, and Change Association…. Use the context menu or the Command Palette, or assign one in Settings.

The arrow keys, Page Up, Page Down, Home, and End move the file-list cursor, and the mouse’s back and forward buttons step through history.

No default shortcut: Go Back, Go Forward, Go to Root on macOS, Refresh File List, Mount S3, Mount SFTP, and Disconnect VFS.

Select Same Extension has no default shortcut. On a keyboard without a numeric keypad, assign other keys to the pattern-selection commands.

Search and filter

No default shortcut: Open Elevated (Linux and Windows), Connect to WSL Distribution (Windows), Open Settings File in Editor, Connection Log, Documentation, and About Newt.

While a terminal has focus, keys other than the terminal shortcuts go to the shell, so on Linux and Windows Ctrl + R, Ctrl + H, and similar keys reach the shell.

Windows and zoom

Zoom changes in 10% steps, applies to every window, and is remembered. The zoom keys are fixed and do not appear in the Command Palette.

Viewer and editor

Viewer and editor commands can be rebound in the Keybindings tab; basic navigation keys such as Escape and the arrow keys cannot. Viewer commands work only in the modes listed.
